Even If

It’s a new year and this past year was one to remember. I’ve heard many people say, “I’m so glad 2020 is over!” What if the new year is not that much better?

We’ve been saying it so much lately, I know I’ve said it a few times – 2021 can’t be as bad as 2020. What assurances do we have that it will be any different, or better yet – what if it’s worst?

With the ending of a year and the beginning of another, there is always anticipation of better things to come, but we all know that in life, things don’t always work out the way we’d like them to, therefore, how do you handle life’s “Why?”

One of my favorite Christian groups, MercyMe, penned a song entitled “Even If.” The song speaks of struggle, disappointment, and unanswered prayers. This life can often bring pain and defeat, but it’s how we stand through these times that makes us overcomers. What gets you through those times when nothing seems to go right? How can someone have “hope” when there seems to be no hope? The main chorus of the song says,

I know you’re able and I know you can

Save through the fire with your mighty hand

But Even if you don’t

My hope is you alone

The writers of the song want us to know that there is a “hope” that is greater than the problems we face in life. Now this is not a fairy tale or imaginary super hero, it is a living hope of a loving God that can bring you through any challenge you face in this life. However, this hope is grounded in the knowledge and understanding that God has been faithful to those who trust and believe in Him. If he’s brought you out of trials before, He could do it again.

So, if things don’t change that much this year, just remember how you came out of the past year. You may have been broken, bruised, or discouraged but you came out with a little more resilience, a bit more resolve and a stronger faith in the one that brought you out of the fire.

But “Even If” things don’t appear to be getting better will you be able to say, “It is well with my soul?”
